Dr Hugh Gundlach is a lecturer and researcher in the Faculty of Education at The University of Melbourne. He teaches in the Master of Teaching (Secondary) program and is the Commerce Coordinator.

A life-long learner, Hugh has completed: a Bachelor of Commerce degree with Honours; a Bachelor of Arts; a Masters of Teaching; a Masters of Education; a Postgraduate Diploma of Teaching; a Diploma of Modern Languages (French) and a Doctorate of Philosophy at Melbourne. He has also completed a Masters of Business Administration and a Masters of Commerce at the Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology’s Graduate School of Business and Law, under academic scholarships.

In 2022, Hugh completed a research project under the Research Training Program Scholarship and the Victorian Department of Education’s ‘Strengthening Teachers’ Grant, investigating teacher wellbeing and retention. He was named as one of the Australian Council for Educational Leaders’ New Voices in Educational Leadership Research in 2023. In 2024 he was awarded one of the ABC’s Top 5 Media Residency positions for Humanities.

Hugh has lectured and tutored in the areas of marketing and management at The University of Melbourne and RMIT, as well as Trinity College and Janet Clarke Hall, both residential colleges of The University of Melbourne. Hugh lived and worked in Janet Clarke Hall as a residential tutor and pastoral care provider. He has also taught secondary level English and Business at Ruyton Girls’ School, St Leonard’s College, and Fintona Girls’ School.

Between teaching appointments, Hugh has performed research, marketing and consulting work for IER in the sport, racing, entertainment and tourism industry, and for the Victorian Association for the Teaching of English (VATE), an educational not-for-profit. He has published in academic journals and trade magazines for marketing, brand management and education.

Hugh enjoys distance running, road cycling, surfing, cross country skiing, hiking and overseas travel.
